Street Performing in Downtown Holland
The City of Holland’s Street Performer Ordinance (Sec 24.34 – Sec. 24.46) requires that street performers obtain a permit from the DDA to perform in Downtown Holland. Once approved for a permit, performers may perform in Downtown Holland seven days a week in approved locations according to the Street Performer Permit rules and regulations. The Street Performer ordinance is designed to make Downtown Holland an attractive location for performers to showcase their talents while busking for tips from visitors.
There is no audition required to obtain a Street Performer permit and any performer that falls within the guidelines outlined by City ordinance is able to apply. Permits are $15 for individuals and $25 for groups. Per the application, battery-operated amplification devices are allowed with the approval of the Chief of Police. Performers may apply for a Street Performer Permit online with a credit card, through the mail with a check made out to the City of Holland, or in the Downtown Holland office inside the Holland Civic Center (150 West 8th Street) during normal business hours. Cash, check, and credit card are accepted in person.
Please note that obtaining a Street Performer permit does not automatically allow you to perform during the Downtown Holland Street Performer Series on Thursday nights in the summer. Details on participating in the Street Performer Series can be found below.
Gentex Street Performer Series
Since its initial launch in 2005, the Gentex Street Performer Series has become one of Downtown Holland’s most popular summer events among both locals and visitors alike. Each Thursday evening in the summer from mid-June to mid-August, over 20 street performers of every variety line 8th Street to entertain the public for free from 6:30 pm – 8:30 pm. Supported by the Michigan Council for the Arts and Cultural Affairs, the Street Performer Series invites all ages to explore the arts in a fun and interactive way.
The Gentex Street Performer Series is a programmed event organized by the PSD. Performers must complete an application process and provide audition materials each year to be considered for the Series. If accepted into the Series, performers will be given a set performance schedule and locations, along with being paid a small stipend for each performance slot. Performers accepted into the Series must obtain a Street Performer Permit from the DDA in order to participate in the event.
If you are interested in applying for the Gentex Street Performer Series, please complete the form below to be added to the email list. Musicians, jugglers, caricature artists, face painters, magicians, dancers, and more are all encouraged to apply. The application is available in mid-April each year and is due in mid-May. No applications are accepted for the Series outside of that time period.
